The main objective of the AQUAFIL network is to facilitate cooperation between local participants and the population for the management of water, which is one of the most important challenges for the future. Actions conducted by the network endeavour to support the implementation of the European Water Framework Directive. The AquaFil network also tries to bring together organisations from member states with other organisations from accessing countries, to contribute to their integration to the EU (Community patrimony in the field of water management). To achieve this, the network organises know-how transfers and pilot actions in the field of water management.

Water, a political choice: The choice of the water management theme comes from a strong political willingness on the part of members of the network.

For partners from member states, it is about the continuation and amplification of an approach that started several years ago through a rural development programme (LEADER).

For municipalities from accessing countries, water management is a courageous political choice, as the local population does not regard the environment as a priority.
