In Val d’Adour, a series of operations were conducted in 2002 in order to rehabilitate the river through innovative techniques, which are environment-friendly.

The Municipality of Sliven has planted trees on a section of the Toundja River and conducted a cleaning operation.

The Syndicate for territorial development of the Valleys of the Arros basin have conducted work to modify the dynamic of rivers. First, a test arrangement operation was conducted on a section of the Arros River: Building of fascines and revegetation of a meander of the Arros River.

By using soft vegetal techniques, this operation made it possible to improve the run-off of water, while decreasing bank erosion and improving the quality of the landscape.

Then, work on jams and alluviation management were carried out. These operations improved the hydrologic situation and limited erosion in sections treated.

Lembeye’s group of municipalities elected to improve the quality of a wetland area and several springs.

Concerning the wetland area, with a surface area of approximately 8,000 m², it was completely cleaned and arranged for a more sustainable management of the site.

Besides, 7 sites including springs (that were previously used for unauthorised waste disposal) were treated, allowing for an improvement of water quality and the preservation of habitats. 
  

 
Planting of trees and cleaning of a river in Sliven
Field interventions conducted in Sliven were the following:

- Planting of 2,000 trees on the banks of the Toundja River in the village of Samouilovo, with not only an environmental objective, but also for the social role to be played by the area.

- A cleaning operation of the Assenovsca River (its Sliven section), mainly to make people aware of floating waste.
